Why Ridge Mander?

In the early 1800s, one Edward Mander, a farmer living in the Elephant and Castle district of London, England, gave his second son, Thomas, the name Ridge as a second Christian name. Why he did this we are not sure even to this day, but it may well have been that his wife's family name was Ridge.

Since then, Ridge Mander as a middle and family name has been passed down through succeeding generations. In the main it has been used for the males of the family (often the eldest), but this is not exclusively so.
Now, in the 21st Century, <Name> Ridge Manders have been found as far afield as England, America, Australia and Canada. So unusual is the name that anyone carrying it is very likely to be related to the world-wide family of Ridge Manders.
